When you’re lucky enough to hold AK as a beginner, what should you do pre-flop when facing a raise or in the post-flop stage? If you’re struggling with these situations, this article is for you!

You should tend to commit a lot of chips or go all-in pre-flop when holding AK. The main reason is that it can win a flip against hands like Jacks or Queens, and it blocks Kings and Aces, with the chances of hitting an Ace or a King on the flop being just around 29%.

However, many beginners mistakenly believe AK is invincible, and their tendency to stack off all the time for bigger profits post-flop is one of the biggest weaknesses of playing this hand.😮

In most scenarios where you’re dealt King and Ace, I suggest taking the lead with aggression and strategic bluffing in the pre-flop stage. Here’s what I mean:

  • If you’re in early position, start with a strong raise
  • If there’s a raise in front of you, counter with a 3-bet to maintain pressure
  • If they 3-bet your initial raise, go for a 4-bet

The lower the table stakes, the more aggressive you should be—playing looser, even going all-in when necessary.

There are a few key reasons why being aggressive before the flop is advantageous：

  • Maximize the pot early: Get as much money in the pot pre-flop rather than waiting for action after the flop.
  • Define your opponents’ ranges and strength.
  • Narrow the field: Ace-King performs best in heads-up situations. Even if the hand reaches the flop, your odds remain relatively stable against a single opponent.

If you hold Ace-King and enter the flop, things can get tricky because Ace-King might not be as strong as it seems. In certain situations, it can even be worse than pocket jacks (JJ).

Your best bet is taking a cautious approach – if you don’t hit, don’t continue barreling too often.

For example, betting into other players on a flop like 4 7 9 or J 5 6 is often pointless. In such cases, there’s a high chance someone has hit a pair or is on their way to completing a straight.

If both players call your bet and you miss the turn, it’s wise to abort the action and fold your hand if you face any resistance—this is especially true when holding AKo.
